CASTORO TITLING is a new companion to the Castoro roman and italic text typefaces. Like the other Castoro fonts, this set of titling capitals is released by Tiro Typeworks Ltd under the Open Font License. The character set covers the same language diacritics as the text types, including those needed for transliteration of South Asian languages. The Castoro Titling cap itals are mapped to both upper- and lowercase character codes, so can be easily used regardless of the encoding of the input text. The design is not just an optical size variation of the text uppercase adapted for use at larger display sizes—lighter, with finer details—, but a separate ‘cut’ of the same style of letters with very different proportions to enliven the appearance of all-caps settings.

I’ve wanted to make a set of titling capitals for a very long time: probably for about as long as I have been interested in type. I’ve admired many exemplars over the year, from different periods and styles, but I always wanted my own: something with classical Roman proportions but crisper than Carol Twombly’s excellent but much overused Trajan. Somewhere in the making of the SBL BibLit roman, then the Murty/Tiro Indic version, which in turn spawned Castoro, it occurred to me that these letters could be taken off their robust text frames and re-hung on those of the Roman capitalis monumentalis. — John Hudson, 14
